International Center for Alcohol Policy 1st Regional Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa

In October 2006, IMANI’s CEO facilitated a Ghanaian delegation to the first regional meeting of ICAP. Mr. Franklin Cudjoe, whose IMANI Center was later to facilitate Ghana’s draft policy on alcohol contributed to the theme discussion of self-regulation.

Armed with education on self-regulation practices, Mr. Cudjoe successfully negotiated with Ghana’s Food and Drugs Board a reasonable end to a temporary ban on alcoholic adverts, some of which the FDB had not sanctioned and rightly asserted they offended sensual senilities of children.

The successful end to the misunderstanding between the formal alcohol beverage economy and the FDB was done in the spirit of mutual respect or what is now known as co-regulation.

Participants from Ghana included

  • Mr. Franklin Cudjoe ,Chief Executive , Imani Ghana
  • Ms. Yvonne Nkrumah, Legal Counsel, Food and Drugs Board
  • Mr. Evans Lartey, Director of Development, IMANI
  • Mr. Eric Kwakye, Group Account Head, Lowe Lintas
